Summary/Objective: The Cook/DSP is responsible for the preparation, serving and clean up of posted menu food items, following established quality and sanitation standards. The Cook/DSP is also responsible for implementation and documentation of goals and objectives for individuals served; be an active advocate for individuals served with an emphasis on individual choice and decision-making.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Report issues of concern to the Supervisor. Offer ideas and suggestions for solution of concerns. Use appropriate methods and channels of communication.
  • Direct Support Responsibilities:
    • Be an active advocate for individuals receiving services to have greater control over their lives. Encourage consumer choice and decision-making.
    • Provide services based on individual goals and objectives. Teach individuals rather than doing for them.
    • Display an ability to motivate individuals to participate in their services.
    • Provide input to the Supervisor for the development of individual goals and objectives.
    • Apply rights restrictions only as determined necessary by the interdisciplinary team and included in the individual plan of persons served.
  • Scheduled work shifts:
    • Find a replacement if unable to work a scheduled shift.
    • Follow the call-in procedure.
    • Work weekends and holidays as scheduled.
  • Safety responsibilities:
    • Provide for the safety of the individual served with the least amount of intrusion as possible.
    • Use behavior strategies to support individuals with challenging behaviors.
    • Respect the property of individuals served.
    • Follow established protocols to de-escalate situations involving individuals' verbal and physical aggression by utilizing CPI techniques.
  • Cook responsibilities:
    • Prepare food per posted menus and according to special diets and standard practices. Provide a wide variety of foods including meats, vegetables, fruits and bakery products.
    • Utilize time efficiently to meet meal service schedules.
    • Effectively estimate food quantities needed to meet menu requirements.
    • Assist in creating and/or revising menus as needed.
    • Follow assigned cleaning duties. Utilize appropriate cleaning/sanitation methods according to department procedures.
    • Ensure safe operation of equipment. Report hazardous situations immediately to the Supervisor.
    • Ensure proper food storage and handling procedures are followed. Rotate stock as needed.
    • Provide education to individuals on healthy eating, menu planning, shopping, and preparing meals.
  • Documentation responsibilities:
    • Complete service documentation to record interventions and supports provided and reflect the goals and ongoing supports of individuals served; include individual responses to interventions and supports.
    • Complete documentation in a timely manner following service provision.
    • Complete incident/accident reports accurately and promptly.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment: This job operates in a licensed facility setting.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    • May require lifting at times, up to 35 pounds. Lifting more than 35 pounds requires the use of a two-person lift, mechanical lift, or assistive equipment.
    • May require prolonged sitting and working at a computer for up to eight hours.
    • May require frequent bending, stooping, and stretching.
    • May require prolonged standing for up to eight hours.
    • Must wear hearing and eye protection in required areas.
    • Must have ability to see objects/persons at a distance.
    • Must have ability to see close work such as typed or handwritten material.
    • Must have ability to hear conversations in a quiet and a noisy environment.
    • Must have ability to determine where a sound is coming from.
    • Must have ability to hear differences among bells, buzzers, beeps, horns, etc.
    • Must have ability to communicate through speech.

Travel: Limited travel is expected for this position.

Preferred Education and Experience:

 

    • At least 18 years of age with High School Diploma or GED.
    • Department of Iowa Inspections and Appeals home study courses on food preparation, sanitation and modified diets or willing to complete within 12 months of employment as a cook preferred.
    • Knowledge of food service equipment.
    • Prior experience in cooking on a large scale preferred.
    • Experience working with persons with disabilities preferred.
    • Basic computer skills including MS Word.
    • Background checks with previous employers, references, law enforcement agencies, and others will be conducted and found satisfactory.
    • Valid driver's license and driver's record deemed acceptable by Imagine the Possibilities, Inc.
